February is Canadian Heart Month

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), people who have close relationships at home, work, or in their community tend to be healthier and live longer. Studies show that people who join forces stand a better chance of staying motivated. Feeling connected with others and having close positive relationships benefit overall health.
Here are a few tips on how to take care of hearts with a little motivation from family and friends:
Be active. Invite a family member or friend for a stroll around the block.
Eat healthy. Ask friends or family to join
Set weight loss goals. Find a weight loss partner. Check-in with each other regularly to compare progress.
Quit smoking. Join a support group.
Manage stress. Practice meditation or try some relaxation therapy.
Improve sleep habits. Instead of watching TV before bed, try listening to soothing music, reading, and avoiding late night meals.
Keep a journal. Record blood pressure readings, weight goals, and physical activities.
How much exercise is enough? NHLBI suggests at least 2 ½ hours of physical activity each week. That’s just 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week. If 30 minutes is hard to get in, try 10 minutes. Gather family and friends and motivate each other for a healthy heart.
